CFP: Journal of Software (SPE) Special Issue on Big Data and Cloud of Things (CoT) - Deadline Extended

Journal of Software: Practice and Experience(SPE)
Special Issue on  Big Data and Cloud of Things (CoT)

Deadline Extended- New Deadline: 30th October 2015

Cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT) are two technologies that are already becoming part of our daily lives and are attracting significant interest from both industry and academia. The Cloud of Things (CoT) is a vision inspired from the IoT paradigm where everyday devices namely smart objects are fully connected to the network and integrated with the cloud. It is expected, the IoT will grow to 35 billion units by 2020 making them one of the main sources of Big Data with characteristics such as volume, heterogeneity, complexity, velocity and value. Specific attention must be paid to address the issues such as data collection, storage, processing, analytics on demand and automatic provision and management of cloud resources to support the growing population of things. In recent years, CoT has given rise to a number of new cloud paradigms (but not limited to) including: Sensing-as-a-Service, Sensing- and Actuation-as-a-Service, Video-Surveillance-as-a-Service, Big Data Analytics-as-a-Service, Data-as-a-Service, Sensor-as-a-Service and Sensor-Event-as-a-Service. Cloud computing is a more mature technology compared to IoT. It can offer virtually unrestricted  capabilities (e.g. storage and processing) to implement IoT services and application that can exploit the data produced by IoT. The cloud essentially acts as a transparent layer between the IoT and applications providing flexibility, scalability and hiding the complexities between the two layers (IoT and applications). However, the integration of cloud and IoT into Cloud of Things impose several challenges such as service discovery and delivery, big data management and analytics, cloud monitoring and orchestration, mobility issues in cloud access, privacy and security and SLA management for both cloud and IoT.

Topics of interest include (but not limited to):

- CoT Architectures and models
- CoT and Big Data Analytics
- Smart resource provisioning for CoT
- CoT applications
- CoT Digital ecosystems
- Data Management in CoT
- Mobile CoT
- Middleware for CoT
- Networking issues in CoT
- Software and tools for CoT
- Monitoring CoT resources
- SLA management in CoT
- Privacy and Security in CoT
- QoS in CoT
- CoT in Healthcare

Schedule
Submission due date: October 30th, 2015
Notification of acceptance: December 30th, 2015
Submission of final manuscript: Jan 30th, 2015
Publication date: 1st Quarter, 2016 (Tentative)

Major Guidelines
The special issue invites original research papers that make significant contributions to the state-of-the-art in Big Data and Cloud of Things research area.   We seek submission of papers that present new, original and innovative ideas for the "first" time in SPE. That means, submission of "extended versions" of already published works (e.g., conference/workshop papers) is not encouraged unless they contain significant number of "new and original" ideas/contributions along with more than 50% brand "new" material. If you are submitting an extended version, you SHOULD submit a cover letter/document detailing (1) the "Summary of Differences" between SPE paper and earlier paper, (2) a clear listing of "new and original" ideas/contributions in SPE paper (identifying sections where they are proposed/presented), and (3) confirming the percentage of new material. Otherwise, submission will be "desk" rejected without any reviews.

Every submitted paper will receive at least two reviews. The editorial review committee will include well known experts in the area of Grid, Cloud, Big Data, and Internet of Things.

Selection and Evaluation Criteria
- Significance to the readership of the journal
- Relevance to the special issue
- Originality of idea, technical contribution, and significance of the presented results
- Quality, clarity, and readability of the written text
- Quality of references and related work
- Quality of research hypothesis, assertions, and conclusion

Author Submission Guidelines
Papers should be formatted according to the SPE Author Guidelines below: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/10.1002/(ISSN)1097-024X/homepage/ForAuthors.html

Manuscript length
Regular papers should not exceed the length of 12 pages including figures and tables. Please note, the special issues page limit is different from SPE regular paper submissions. Papers that exceed the length of 12 pages may not be considered for review and publication. In special cases up to 15 pages  will be allowed subject to approval from the Guest Editors. Authors aiming for 15 page submission should contact the Guest Editors in advance.

Submission Instruction
The article will be submitted in the usual way via the online submission site (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/spe).

When submitting a manuscript for this special issue, authors should take care to select 'Special Issue Big Data and IoT' as the Manuscript Type and should select Dr. Rajiv Ranjan as the preferred editor to handle the submission.
